The bumpy ride to warmth

Our coastal weather never ceases to amaze me.  It was only last year, that we could not seem to find a rain shower until the day after we turned on the sprinklers.

This year we have enjoyed regular rains.  In the last week, we have gotten over 2.3 inches of precipitation.  I would be very surprised if we have any subsoil moisture deficit. I do not mind the rains, but as is often the case, they are followed by winds this time of year.

We have had plenty of wind recently.  I am sure that my tomato plants would not have survived without the bales of pine straw that I have protecting them from our stiff breezes.  So far they are doing well, and i believe all four plants now have blooms.

I am not sure we will have a tomato as early as last year when I got one on June 1, but I bet I get one before the end of the first week in June.  At least I suspect the four days of eighty degree temperatures that I see in the forecast for the last of April will help speed my plants along.

The picture in the post was taken this afternoon over on Emerald Isle.   There were very few people on the beach, and those that were there had on clothes more to protect from sand blasting than from the cooler temperatures near the water.

I keep telling myself that it is only April, but I also know that we have seen a few nicer days in previous Aprils. Weather is all about patience and taking advantage of the good days when they show up.

As I look towards the weekend, I see some temperatures in the mid to upper seventies.  That is just fine with me.  We need some heat to warm the water or summer with its days of fishing might never get here.

I cannot complain too much since we had a great weekend being guides for friends visiting the area.
