A fine day for a beach walk

Today was the day I have been waiting for all month.  What is surprising is that I have had to wait this long.  Some winters we have seen days like today in January, but it did not happen this "winter to remember."

After spending some time this morning spraying weed killer on our pine mulch beds, I had a nice lunch with one of my fishing buddies.  We solved the world's problems and talked about spring fishing over some delicious chicken wings at Fairway Restaurant.  I was pleased to find out that they are switching to Pepsi products.  They even had some Diet Pepsi in the back in honor of the occasion.

Lunch lasted until after one PM, and then I headed to beach.  I knew it was going to nice, but I had no idea it would be as pleasant as I found it.  Third Street Beach was my first stop.  There was only one car in the parking lot.

I left my sandals by the steps and walked down to the water to take some pictures.  The waves had a beautiful sparkle to them.  I had a very close encounter with a wonderful shore bird, a Willet I believe.  He or she was very cooperative and did some nice poses for me.

After enjoying Third Street Beach I headed back to Emerald Isle and turned out Coast Guard Road.  I parked in the small parking lot just by Station St.  I finished the trip to Inlet Drive on foot and took a left on Wyndtree towards the easternmost beach access which is about halfway to the corner of Wyndtree.

This is one of my favorite beaches.  The slope is very shallow,  and there are a lot of dunes between the road and the beach.  You can also hear the big Bogue Inlet buoy.

I had a great time out on the beach.  I even got my feet wet, but given that the water was still in the fifties, my feet were all that I was willing to sacrifice.  It was warm enough and the winds were quiet enough that by the time I got back to the car, I had worked up a little sweat. That is a sign that warmer weather has arrive.  I knew that I should have switched to a tee shirt before I went to the beach.  I just hope that I don't have to put blue jeans on again until next December.

There are more pictures from today on my Picasa web albums site.  You can even see how well my tomato plants are doing.
