Great Easter Weekend, Summer around the Corner

The Easter weekend marks the beginning of the beach season along North Carolina's Crystal Coast.  While we didn't have a perfect weekend, we had a very nice one, and I believe we had some good crowds in spite of the higher gas prices.

I also think that summer is just around the corner just like the channel to the White Oak River is just a turn away from the egret in my picture.

Our high temperatures were close to eighty degrees for most of the weekend.  However, persistent winds off the still cool ocean waters made it seem somewhat cooler if you were on the beach.

While the river and sound temperatures are above or close to seventy degrees, the ocean still hasn't gotten over the 70F hump yet.  There were plenty of people on the beach and some in the water, but there will be nicer times for playing in the saltwater.

The strong and persistent winds did put a little damper on the boating.  I made a run down the White Oak to Swansboro and the ICW from our home in Bluewater Cove on Saturday afternoon.  The water was choppy in the river and down by Swansboro.  Most of my trip was on the wave tops so boaters will appreciate that there will be nicer days for enjoying the area waters.

We had company from Northern Virginia this weekend, and it was nice to have some family around for Easter weekend.  Unfortunately a contractor in the nearly endless construction next to our house decided to start up his table saw at 7:30 AM on Sunday morning.  It might not have been so bad, but the weather was so nice, and we had all our windows open.  The table saw was about 35 ft from our bedroom window.  I'll be proposing some contractor guidelines at the next HOA board meeting.

We still had a wonderful weekend with a great lunch at Nicky's of Swansboro.  My lobster roll was exceptional.  Then we made a stop at Winberry's Produce for some strawberries, asparagus, and new potatoes. We swung by Coastal Outlet for a sample of some deep fried peanuts and finished our shopping at Secret Treasures where some high pressure sales cost them a sale.

Easter lunch was a great meal, and then we went over to Emerald Isle for a short walk on the Bogue Inlet Pier and finished the day with some birding at the new Emerald Isle boat ramps.

I was pleased to see that they have a marked channel from the EI boat ramps to the ICW.

I am looking forward to that summer which is just around the corner.  The swimming pool at Bluewater Cove is starting to look mighty inviting.
