I predicted that it would be a nice day. The only thing I got wrong was that it turned out to be a great day.
We left the dock at about 11:30 AM, headed over to Dudley's for some fuel and then went up the Intracoastal and headed out Bogue Inlet.
Our goal was get back to the area where we had so much luck with bluefish last week. We got out beyond the beaches, and it was a little rougher out in the ocean.
We did find a great concentration of fish but the current was a real challenge. We finally got a secure anchor in on the second try. Unfortunately our baits looked more like we were trolling than fishing with 4 ounce weights. I love fishing but I do not enjoy fishing with more than four ounces of weight so we gave up our spot with all the fish, and headed back in the Inlet.
We stopped along the marshes that line the Inlet's west side just before the ICW. We found a spot where a small stream was pouring out of the marshes. We got three really large lizard fish and one sea robin. We caught the lizard fish on lures. They will hit almost anything.
We then cruised one of the back ways to Swansboro, but we did not find any fish there or in Swansboro harbor. We decided to go back to our favorite hole on the White Oak. It is almost at my dock.
Until that point we had only seen a handful of boats. Our hole had nine fishing boats in the area. There is plenty of room on the White Oak and no one was fishing the area we like so we anchored in one spot, fished for a while then moved to some deeper water.
That did the trick, I caught half a dozen croakers in quick succession. My partner, Dean, also landed a number of fish so we tasted enough success and headed in a little after three. We had thrown everything back so cleanup was a snap.
While it was not a great fishing day, we caught fish, and feeling that warm Carolina sun on your back in November is a true pleasure of the south.
Here are some pictures from the afternoon trip. They are mostly from my camera that I mounted on the center console.
